Kenneth F. Harrington is internationally known as a leading British lapidary—evaluating, cutting and polishing gem-quality stones. He is also an expert valuer and buyer of rough diamond.
After managing the workshop at Mathews Lapidaries in Hatton Garden, he started his own cutting shop, subsequently expanding it into jewellery manufacturing and including extensive training of apprentices. He is widely respected both as a teacher and, specifically, as the creator of the modern briolette cut.
He has valued and purchased rough diamonds in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, the Congo and Uganda and purchased rough coloured stones in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Kenya. He is a certified exporter from Sierra Leone and importer to England.
In 2011 he founded Salamander Gems, a full-service jewellery company based in East Anglia which combines a retail outlet and secure website with an extensive workshop, including two lapidaries and two certified gemmologists.
Ken is a guest speaker for The Gemmological Association of Great Britain. Click "Media" to see reports of his appearances in the Association's magazine, Gems & Jewellery.
